This man will forever be remembered as the person who stopped the breakout of World War III, and possibly the end of the world as we know it.
Vasili Arkhipov was a Soviet Naval officer and one of the officials present on the B-59 submarine during the Cold War, in 1962. When the B-59 got too close to the American border, the American Naval Defense launched depth charges to warn the B-59 to surface. The captain interpreted this as an attack and went to fire the nuclear missile the B-59 had on board, but for this, the captain and two others including the commander had to approve. This was a big decision to make. Vasili Arkhipov, one of the respective three, refused to consent to the nuclear missile launch because he felt the charges were only a warning. But by doing so, this man saved humanity from the breakout of nuclear war; the launch would indeed have triggered a counterattack.
This story has an important message to offer its readers, telling us not to jump to conclusions before thinking twice. A single mistake can be devastating, and we should always be careful. Anyways we should be glad that Vasili Arkhipov for clutching up. After all, that's how we're here right now…
HATS OFF TO YOU!
